Entitled ‘Teatro Dentro’, the art, training and inclusion initiative promoted by the ‘Paolo Pittalis’ prison in Tempio Pausania, a high-security institution open to the world of ideas, culture and creativity.
In spite of the constraints that its nature entails, the Tempio prison facility has been committed for years to applying the principles of prison treatment with conviction, promoting initiatives that focus on the individual and his or her capacity for change. The aim is to make the prison not only a place of custody, but also a place of growth, reflection and relations with the outside community, and projects such as ‘Teatro Dentro’ are clear evidence of the desire to build bridges and opportunities for encounters, also open to the contribution of volunteers, associations and local institutions, in the conviction that culture and art can be concrete tools for inclusion and dialogue.
“Teatro Dentro” develops as a natural continuation of the “LiberArte” experience , born from the collaboration between the Prison Administration and the Prison University Pole (PUP) of the University of Sassari, which for several years has aimed to promote cultural and training initiatives aimed at enhancing education as a tool for rehabilitation and personal growth. Precisely in order to give continuity to that path, which ended last January, and to valorise the results achieved, the Casa di Reclusione management chose to involve the Spazio T theatre company, coordinated and directed by the actress and director Chiara Murru, in a new and more articulated project, realised in cooperation with the PUP of Sassari, the Diocesan Caritas and the Museo Organica.
“Teatro Dentro” is a project conceived as a path of personal and collective growth, in which the language of theatre becomes a tool of knowledge, relationship and transformation.
Through creative work, participants develop relational, communication and psychological skills that are fundamental in the reintegration process, cultivating respect, mutual listening and a spirit of cooperation. The theatre thus becomes a space of inner freedom, where they learn to manage conflicts, transform frustration into creative energy and rediscover a sense of confidence in the future.
In addition to the expressive and dramaturgical dimension, explored with the advice of lecturer Loredana Salis of the University of Sassari, the theatre workshop also aims to provide technical skills – from costume to set design, from lighting engineering to sound design – that can be spent in the professional field. For this reason, the project also includes costume, lighting and sound design workshops conducted respectively by costume designer Fabio Loi, lighting technician Tony Grandi and musician and composer Mario Garau. In addition, ‘Teatro Dentro‘ also involves the director and videomaker Laura Piras who has been entrusted with the task of making an audiovisual about the project.
In a context marked by deprivation of freedom, art and work thus become instruments of dignity and redemption: a first step towards social reintegration and a concrete form of freedom.
To complete the itinerary, on Sunday, 19 October, at the Museo Organica, the exhibition ‘Stories of wood and freedom’ will be inaugurated, presenting sculptures in reclaimed wood made by one of the inmates involved in the project. The works, symbolising a material that is reborn into a new form, poetically represent the possibility of transformation and rebirth that art can offer. The exhibition will remain open to the public until 26 October.
‘Teatro Dentro’ represents a virtuous model of cooperation between institutions and the community, a concrete example of how culture can contribute to re-education and social reintegration, consistent with the constitutional principles and the educational mission of the Prison Administration.
The project is made possible thanks to funding from the Ministry of Justice and contributions from the Fondazione di Sardegna, the University of Sassari Penitentiary Pole and the Sassari Right to University Study Authority (ERSU).
